Societal upheaval in the face of modern automation.

The ascent of Trump as a "populist" has mainly centered on how he's going to bring manufacturing and coal jobs back to the US and stop "unfair" Chinese competition. While I actually can agree that on the margins there are cases of China being "unfair", that's not what energized his base. Working class people have seen factory jobs evaporate since the '70s and while most of us have rebounded from the 2008 great recession it's probably fair to say that uneven recovery among the social classes has fed into this populism. As added stress to the system, you have younger people chasing a college education with a much higher degree of desperation, as it might be the only chance at-- and certainly no guarantee of-- a good job.
